Germany plans to fine airlines EUR1,332 euros (USD1,535) per metric ton if they engage in excessive fuel tankering and fail to meet mandatory sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) blending quotas, under draft legislation implementing the European Union's ReFuelEU Aviation regulation. EU rules require airlines to uplift at least 90% of their required fuel at the departure airport to discourage tankering, the practice of carrying extra fuel from another airport to avoid refuelling, which increases aircraft weight and emissions. Germany's Federal Aviation Office (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt - LBA) oversees enforcement and could impose additional fines of up to EUR50,000 (USD57,600) for breaches of reporting and notification requirements.
