SkyWork Airlines (Bern) has announced a new strategic partnership with MHS Aviation (Germany) (M2, Munich) that will see the German carrier take a 40% stake in SkyWork allowing it to continue operations. The carrier was facing a potential shutdown after Swiss aviation authority BAZL had demanded a capital increase to provide financial security for the carrier's future. Since its major relaunch in October 2010, SkyWork has accumulated major losses reportedly exceeding 40 million CHF (44 million USD). CEO Tomislav Lang has resigned from his position with his 40% stake now reportedly owned by MHS (although exact details of the transaction have not been confirmed by MHS and SkyWork yet). Former Accountable Manager Rolf Hartleb has been appointed new CEO and has announced that SkyWork would now have to consolidate its operations in Berne and cut several loss making routes. MHS owner Gerd Brandecker, also the previous owner of defunct regional carrier Cirrus Airlines (Saarbrücken), told Swiss Radio SRF that SkyWork would have to save at least six million CHF (6.6 million USD) in costs annually to become profitable and that he would not provide funds to continue operating loss making routes. According to Brandecker, SkyWork would have to find at least four more profitable routes in the foreseeable future to continue operations and that the two carriers would now be actively considering domestic or international routes from airports in Germany. SkyWork currently operates five Do328-100s and two Dash 8-400s on scheduled and charter services from Berne. MHS has four Do328-100s (three of which are wet-leased to Sun-Air (EZ, Billund)) and also operates business jets and helicopters.
