Stobart Air (Dublin International) parent, the Stobart Group, is to submit a new planning application to authorities in the United Kingdom over its proposed redevelopment of Carlisle airport in England's Lake District.

Stobart Group acquired the airport on a 150 year lease in May 2009 and had planned to spend GBP25million (USD43million) on developing a 36'600sqm freight-distribution centre and on the resurfacing of the airport's runway for passenger flights and air freight.

It had also intended to base an ATR42 at the airport for use on daily passenger flights to Dublin International and London Southend.

Those plans were, however, put on hold following a successful legal challenge by Irthington farmer, Gordon Brown, who argued that proposed state subsidies for the airport were illegal under European law.

A subsequent reapplication for planning approval was granted by the Carlisle City Council but subsequently overturned in the High Court in March 2014 on the grounds that there was no evidence to show the passenger flights predicted by Stobart Group would ever materialise.
