Alas Uruguay (Montevideo Carrasco) secured its Air Operators Certificate (AOC) from the Uruguayan civil aviation authority (Dirección Nacional de Aviación Civil e Infraestructura Aeronáutica - DINACIA) on Saturday, October 30 following an eighteen month application process.
Using a pair of B737-300s, the start-up has proposed a December 20 launch date for scheduled flights from Montevideo Carrasco to Asunción in Paraguay and Santiago de Chile. Buenos Aires Ministro Pistarini in Argentina and São Paulo Guarulhos and Rio de Janeiro International in Brazil are also on the cards though they are dependent on the requisite traffic rights being secured. Uruguayan media reports suggest that the start-up may operate charter flights as an interim measure.
Founded by former PLUNA (Montevideo Carrasco) employees, Alas Uruguay is a corporation under the control of a civil association called ACTA which itself is formed out of two unions: ACIPLA for pilots and OTAU for aviation industry employees in general.
