The state government of West Bengal in eastern India has asked Air India (AI, Delhi International), through its Alliance Air (India) (9I, Delhi International) subsidiary, to begin scheduled commercial flights to Cooch Behar.
According to local press reports, the request is for an ATR42 to ply regular Kolkata-Cooch Behar flights. The state government recently upgraded the terminal facility and associated infrastructure which is now fully functional.
Northeast Shuttles (Agartala) was the last carrier to operate regular flights between the two cities in September 2011. On that occasion, the service operated for roughly one month before being terminated due to poor loads.
