Lion Air (JT, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) has announced it has formally ended B747 operations with the retirement of its sole remaining B747-400, PK-LHG (msn 24065). Flightradar24 ADS-B data shows the near 30-year-old jet ended commercial flight operations in December last year and has been parked at Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta ever since. Sistership PK-LHF (msn 24063) retired from service in early 2016 and has since been scrapped.
Together, Lion Air used the two Boeing widebodies to ply trunk Indonesian routes connecting Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, Denpasar, Medan Kuala Namu, Batam, Surabaya, and Makassar, as well as on Hajj/Umrah flights to Jeddah International and Madinah in Saudi Arabia.
Lion Air said in a statement it will replace the B747s with a fleet of A330-900s for which it has firm orders for ten and options for four more. The first of two A330neo due in 2019 will deliver in May with the remaining eight due in 2020.
The Indonesian carrier already operates three A330-300s alongside ten B737-8s (grounded), thirty-eight B737-800s, and sixty-six B737-900(ER)s.
