Indonesia AirAsia (QZ, Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta) is set to expand its fleet from nearly 30 to as many as 100 aircraft, the chief executive of current parent holding Capital A, Tony Fernandes, said at a Forbes Global CEO Conference. This would also imply the carrier's rollover to an A320neo family fleet.
“We've ordered 350 aircraft. Many of those will come to Indonesia," Fernandes said.
Capital A has previously identified Indonesia as one of its most important growth markets, with Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta positioned as a key hub for “interesting routes” to North Asia, Australia, and the Middle East.
The plan forms part of a broader fleet expansion of AirAsia (AK, Kuala Lumpur International), which includes ongoing discussions with aircraft manufacturers Airbus, Embraer, and COMAC for a potential regional jet order. Fernandes said negotiations were now “in the final process.”
According to the ch-aviation fleets data, AirAsia has outstanding direct orders for 321 A321-200NX and 36 A321-200NX(LR) aircraft, to be distributed among its units in Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand. It had previously signed a memorandum of understanding for fifty A321-200NY(XLR)s.
Indonesia AirAsia currently operates twenty-eight A320-200s, with two more due on transfer from Thai AirAsia. It has never operated any A320neo family aircraft. The carrier serves 36 routes across 26 destinations in seven countries.
