The Greek island of Chios will have its only airport closed from November 15, 2026 to March 15, 2027, as the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) moves forward with runway and infrastructure upgrades in advance of the 2027 summer season. The renovations will see the runway length increase from its current 1,511 metres to 1,799 metres, allowing for the accommodation of larger aircraft.
Local organisations and civic bodies are opposing the project, after its originally scheduled January 1, 2027, start date was brought forward without consultation, leaving the island without connectivity during the festive season. The island is currently served by Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air, and SKY Express (Greece).
