Eurowings (EW, Düsseldorf) has cancelled around 300 flights for the remainder of the Winter 2017/18 season, mostly on domestic routes in Germany. According to Focus, the decision was partially caused by a lack of available aircraft.

The LCC branch of Lufthansa Group had previously significantly boosted its domestic capacity following the bankruptcy of Air Berlin (1991).

According to an e-mail sent to the affected customers, seen by Focus, the carrier will seek to rebook all passengers onto Lufthansa flights.

The cancellations affect less than 1% of all flights and are not "set in stone", which means that some of the flights can still be reintroduced, Eurowings' spokesman told Reuters.

Lufthansa Group has recently been granted European Commission approval to take over a part of Air Berlin's assets, including its subsidiary LGW - Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter. To alleviate the regulator's concerns, the group had to forego some slots at Düsseldorf to ensure that its total number of slots at this airport grows by a maximum of 1%.
