US treasury secretary Scott Bessent has warned "both Iranian airlines" of impending additional sanctions as a part of Washington's offensive against Tehran.

"The US Treasury continues our Economic Fury campaign against the Iranian regime," he wrote on X. "We will also be shutting down both Iranian airlines’ access to landing spots, refuelling, and ticket sales."

It is not clear which airlines Bessent meant. ch-aviation data shows there are currently 31 active airlines in Iran with at least one large aircraft. The biggest by number of aircraft are Mahan Air, IranAir, and ATA Airlines (Iran).

It is also unclear how the US would further sanction the airlines. Both Mahan Air and IranAir are already designated by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), which bans US entities from any transactions with these companies. While it severely restricts the airlines' access to aircraft and foreign technology, including booking systems and payment services, it generally has not stopped them from operating international flights to select countries.

The US Department of the Treasury has not responded to ch-aviation's request for clarification.
