Thai Smile (Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) is set to be spun off into a subsidiary of Thai Airways International (TG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) after being given the go-ahead by the Thai cabinet. According to a source in the Thai Ministry of Transport, the spin-off is mainly aimed at boosting operational efficiency and cutting losses for both airlines, its parent company in particular, who would stand to lose an estimated USD9.6million (THB300million) this year alone without it. The source said that once the subsidiary is up and running, the national carrier would gradually transfer 14 domestic and international flight routes it currently operates to Thai Smile. Launched in 2012, Thai Smile aims to tap into the market between budget carriers and full-service airlines. The spin-off is expected to generate a profit of THB64million for the airline this year, and roughly THB8.6billion in total over the next five years.
